A cost-of-living chart can tell you where groceries are cheaper. It cannot tell you what your particular move will cost. Short stays, location requirements, healthcare needs, and the way you earn money can change the picture substantially.
Compare the same lifestyle
Start with the housing you would really choose. If you need quiet calls and dependable internet, an inexpensive shared room is not equivalent to a furnished apartment with a workspace. Compare neighborhoods, lease lengths, deposits, and whether utilities are included. Short-term furnished rentals often cost more than the local long-term average.
Count the costs around the rent
Build categories for groceries, eating out, public transport, mobile data, workspace, healthcare and insurance, subscriptions, and recreation. Add one-off arrival expenses: flights, baggage, temporary accommodation, deposits, document fees, and supplies. Some of these costs arrive before your first normal month begins.
Account for money movement
If you earn in one currency and spend in another, look at conversion rates and transfer fees. Allow for exchange-rate movement instead of assuming today's price will hold. Check how you will access your money if a card is lost or an account is temporarily locked. Keep emergency funds available through more than one route.
Include the cost of disruption
A cheap apartment is not a bargain if poor connectivity interrupts client calls. Long commutes, unreliable transport, and frequent relocation can drain productive hours. Put a reasonable value on your working time and include that in decisions about housing and location.
Use a three-scenario budget
Create a baseline month, a higher-cost month, and a first-month setup budget. Price each with current, verifiable local sources and keep a buffer for surprises. Revisit the budget after a short visit, when you have seen your own spending pattern.
A lower headline price does not guarantee a lower total cost. The useful question is whether a place lets you live well, work reliably, and keep your finances resilient.
